Colin
The hype has been around for a while but I have finally caught up with the dvd of Colin - the zombie movie allegedly made for £45. Colin has two major claims to fame. The first, as I stated is that it was made for only £45. I think this may have been a bit of a stretch. Even if everybody involved game their time for free and you dont count the cost of the camera, editing equipment or any other factors which would cost money if you had to buy from scratch, £45 is still a little hard to believe. I dont mean that to be a criticism of the film - its very good - I just doubt the figure they claim as total costs. The fact is that if they spent £4,500 making this film that would still be a massive achievement as it really does hold its own as a feature film and the makers should be proud of it whatever the costs. The second claim to fame for Colin is probably more interesting. It has been proclaimed as the first film told from the zombie perspective. On a technicality, "I, Zombie" was a film which did this some years before but that had a very different premise as it featured an articulate man who had been infected slowly deterioration into zombie-ness. Colin by Comparison takes a man who rapidly descends into Romero style zombie-ness, and then continues his story. As far as I know it is the first film to do this and it does it very well. The fact is this home-made film is really very good. It has a tight story and characters you empathise with and there is a good proportion of Hollywood output that cant boast that. This week I have been mostly reading: The Samurai Film by Alain Silver Current Music: Spinal Tap - Break Like The Wind |

Points adjustment for Apocalypse and a fluff question
I am building a scratch Warhound Titan with Vulcan Mega-bolter and Plasma Blastgun. The points and rules for those are in the lovely (and over-priced) Apocalypse expansion. While building the Titan, I added a magnetic mount on the side of the cockpit/head for a secondary weapon. I have the idea of using an Autocannon with an AA mount, a Lascannon or a Plasma Cannon. My first questions is, what kind of extra points should I assign to those adding those weapons? ( I don't want to corrupt your thinking before I get an unbiased answer out of you, so I'll put my thoughts under the cut. )Second, I have a fluff question. I have not read about Titans and thus do not know much about them. I vaguely recall that the Titan Legions are their own separate fighting force. Where they ever allied with Space Marine Chapters/Legions or the IG to teh point where the Titans took on the SM/IG colors and heraldry? Also, what is a good resource for typical Titan markings? Going back to Apocalypse, I'm also looking forward to get a Tau Barracuda next year, but I hate the weapon loadout. Currently it is equipped with a nose-mounted Ion Cannon, TL Missile Pods and two burst cannons. With these weapons it is valued at 220 points. I just don't see it as having a role on an Apocalypse battlefield with those weapons. I'd rather use it as a multi-role tank hunter/air defense/support craft. My preferred weapons would be a Railgun (I have no decided if I want submunitions or not), two Missile Pods with AA mount, Markerlights rather than burst cannons, targeting array, and target lock. In this configuration, it acts as a tank hunter with that S-10 AP-1 against side armor Railgun, as an interceptor with 4 shots at S-7 BS-4, and as a support craft with those market lights highlighting vital targets. ( Again, thoughts under cut ) |

And it's over (no, really - I mean it this time, dammit!) http://community.livejournal.com/adeptusastartes/1547883.htmlAnd so the fall/winter adeptusastartes painting oath is over and done now, or will be in a couple hours when I (hopefully) won't be awake to post about it. I have all the completions and excuses I can remember added to the original post (linked within the link above) and if I've missed you, well...tell me. Thanks for playing along, all, and hopefully this is something you enjoy doing every now and again. I know it really helps me find motivation to sit down and stay focused on a proj...ooh! Shiny...where was I? Oh, right, focus. Anyway, it's nice to have the motivator and to see some excellent works from everyone posted as we go along. So, as we roll up 2009 and reflect on a great many oaths over the past year, merrily toasting/mocking those who have failed and wassailing ourselves silly, I just have to say...ooh! Shiny again! Seriously, it's good working with ya'll. See you in 2010 when we commence the year-long "Paint it as you buy it" oath and any number of smaller silly things that come up. Cheers! The Changed?
I'm on the hunt for new books to read and having read through Max Brooks, David Wellington, the Permuted Press collection and some of Coscom Entertainment's selections I'm trying out other publishers. Has anyone read The Changed by B.J. Burrow? It is published by Apex. |

Dying To Live
This week I have been mostly reading: Dying To Live (a novel of life among the undead) by Kim Paffenroth This is one of the best zombie novels Ive read in a long time. It starts off in a fairly standard post-outbreak world where Romero model zombies are doing their apocalyptic thang but it very quickly develops the main characters and sends them to some of the darkest places Ive seen explored in zombie (or any) fiction. I had only moderate expectations for this book but I was pleased and surprised to find that its a real page turner. Hello all! I have never posted here before but have been watching for a year or so.
Currently I am writing my final paper for school on the likelihood of a zombie apocalypse and general zombie survival. I need to get opinions from real, preferably not undead, people on the subject and I thought: Who better to ask than zombie_survival ? I realize here we all believe in the imminent threat of Zed, but when will he come for us?

And lo, the deadline did apporacheth, and lo, the mockery was prepared
It is the 15th of December (for those not in the know), and that means the conclusion of the fall/winter adeptusastartes painting oath. Current stats are posted on the original entry: http://community.livejournal.com/adeptusastartes/1537447.htmlGiven that it's the 15th ALL DAY (what won't those wacky scientists think up next?) you still have time to get your entries in to close out your oath and avoid beginning your holiday under an avalanche of merciless malign mockery meted out most mischievously...stop that. Sorry, the pain meds make alliteration rather easy... Anyway, feel free to respond here or to the original post with your completed works, or heck, just post it on your own if you're all independantly-minded and such. But somehow let me know so your name, too, may be added to the list o' vaunted painters whose near-god-like status is the envy of hobbyists everywhere, draws hordes of attractive members of the opposite sex who crave nothing more than to adore the completed oathers, and inevitably means lottery winnings, political success and general bliss. Given that I set up the oath, you're on my clock (so there!) which means you have 15 hours until the turning of the clock and the closing of the oath. So, the heck with that job! What family? Get painting if you've not done so! Lottery winnings and attractive companions await! Current Mood: amused |

Thunder! Thunder! Thunderwolves, ho!
Being a hopeless Space Wolf addict (been playing 'em since about '88 or so...I struggle to remember that far back) I of course picked up the new codex and am intrigued by the Thunderwolves cavalry. Obviously, they're a heavy shock unit in the game and I'm sure all the rage among power players out there, but I was more fascinated from a modelling perspective, especially after seeing how atrocious the "official" model looked - did he run into a wall or something? Anyway, been nosing around to find something to use as a suitbaly big lupine mount. ( Here's what I found )What do ya'll think? Current Mood: contemplative |

Non-fiction Book
This isnt strictly speaking about zombies (or about zombies at all, in fact) but I think it may be of interest to some in this community. Ive just finished reading Daniel Defoe's "A Journal Of The Plague Year" which is more or less an eye-witness account of the outbreak of Black Death in London and surrounding area. The accounts of a serious outbreak, of governments attempts to halt contagion and of peoples attempts to cope and survive while infection spread throughout the land will be familiar to fans of zombie fiction. The difference is, this has happened and despite the age of the book it doesnt take much imagination to transfer to modern times. Just putting it out there... 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies'; coming to film?!!! WOO HOO!! I AM SO EXCITED!!!!
Natalie Portman to star in, produce 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies'; movie of best-selling book
AP/Handout Natalie Portman is taking on starring and producing roles in 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.' Natalie Portman is taking on zombies - and Jane Austen.Portman is set to star in and produce a film based on the best-selling book, "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," reports Variety.com. The mash-up book by Seth Grahame-Smith revisits Jane Austen's classic novel "Pride and Prejudice," adding flesh-eating zombies and taking other significant liberties with the plot. The book was published in April 2009 by Quirk Books, a company known for taking public domain novels and blending them with fanboy favorites and pop-culture elements, like zombies, ninjas and sea monsters.Grahame-Smith's version does maintain familiar elements of the Austen classic — the timeless tale of a heroine searching for love and independence — but adds the plot twist of a deadly virus outbreak that turns victims into undead vicious killers, reports Variety.com.Portman, who stars in the film "Brothers," currently in theaters, will play the leading character, feisty Elizabeth Bennet. The film will be directed by Richard Kelly and produced by Dark Films and Handsome Charlie films, Natalie Portman's own company. Recently, Dark Films has released, "The Box," "World's Greatest Dad," and "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell."According to IMDB.com, the film is slated for a 2011 release.

i know what i want for christmass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNu4CluFOcw"ARhrrrr is an augmented reality shooter for mobile camera-phones, created at Georgia Tech Augmented Environments Lab and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD-Atlanta). The phone provides a window into a 3d town overrun with zombies. Point the camera at our special game map to mix virtual and real world content. Civilians are trapped in the town, and must escape before the zombies eat them! From your vantage point in a helicopter overhead, you must shoot the zombies to clear the path for the civilians to get out. Watch out though as the zombies will fight back, throwing bloody organs to bring down your copter. Move the phone quickly to dodge them. You can also use Skittles as tangible inputs to the game, placing one on the board and shooting it to trigger an explosion.
One of the inspirations for this game was the game Joe Warpin, from our Handheld Augmented Reality games class" |
